A serious car and pickup truck accident on I-64 near Oyster Point Road in Newport News, Virginia (VA), led to the death of a woman named Pennie Hampton. The car in front of her, a Mercury Tracer, suffered a tire failure. Hampton did the right thing and slowed down in addition to activating her flashers.

During this time, a Ford F-150 attempted to make a lane change to maneuver around the slower moving traffic. The driver of the F150 failed to stop in time and slammed into Mrs. Hampton’s car, a Ford Focus. That impact caused the Ford Focus to strike the Mercury Tracer from behind, according to WAVY.com.

After the first impact, the driver of a Mercedes lost control of his vehicle, spun around and made contact with the passenger rear side of the Ford Focus. The driver of the Tracer suffered injuries, and Hampton lost her life.

This tragic Newport News car accident illustrates the importance of being extremely cautious when changing lanes. People should not wantonly disregard traffic to change lanes just because the lane they are in is moving slowly. It is irresponsible and increases the risk of serious car wrecks like this one.
