Several students are recovering in Virginia Beach after a car hit their school bus on June 13.
The bus accident happened at 3:40 PM at Jericho and N. Witchduck roads. A witness to the accident in Virginia Beach stated that a white car was traveling on North Witchduck Road and slammed into the side of the school bus.
The school district stated that 29 students were on the bus, and five of them were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.
Police are investigating this serious bus crash and will soon determine if charges should be filed.
Our personal injury attorneys are based in Virginia Beach. We are relieved that no children were apparently seriously injured in this bus accident. We also are glad that generally speaking, fatal school bus accidents are fairly rare across the US. From 2005 to 2014, 106 people in school buses were killed in accidents across the country.
Still, it always is a good idea to have reminders about how to drive safely around school buses. The National Safety Council states that most children who die in bus-related crashes are just four to seven years old. Some of the deaths occur when the children are hit by cars in the school bus, but others occur when the children are either hit by the bus or by other vehicles illegally passing a stopped school bus. Here are some important safety tips:
- Do not block the crosswalk when you are stopped at a red light, thus forcing pedestrians to walk around the car.
- In a school zone where the flashers are blinking, slow down. Stop and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Never pass a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing.
- Never pass a school bus from behind if it is stopped and children are getting on or off.
It is very important for Virginia drivers to drive with caution around school buses, because an accident can result in many injuries and possibly death. If you hit a school bus and injure children, there could be a personal injury lawsuit if you are found to be liable for the accident. People injured in a bus accident can receive compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages and more.
