On October 20, Graco Children’s Products, Inc. announced a recall of approximately 2 million Graco strollers, including the Graco Quattro Tour and Metrolite models. The products were recalled due to entrapment and strangulation risks. Specifically, the company, along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), received reports of 4 infant strangulations between the years of 2003 and 2005. There are 5 additional reports of infant entrapment that resulted in cuts, bruises, and breathing difficulty.

According to the CPSC press release, these reported injuries and deaths have the potential to occur when a child placed in the stroller is not harnessed, resulting in the infant passing through the opening between the stroller tray and the seat bottom. That same press release indicates that the entrapment and strangulation hazards posed by the space gap are not present when the stroller is being used with an infant car seat.

The design issue that led to the recall was addressed in 2008 when a new industry standard was put in place to require larger stroller openings that prevent infant entrapment and strangulation hazards.

The products included in the recall were older versions of the Graco Quattro Tour strollers and travel systems manufactured prior to November 2006, and the Metrolite strollers and travel systems manufactured prior to July 2007. These products were distributed between November 2000 and December 2007. A complete list of product model numbers included in the recall is available on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

Graco, alongside the CPSC, warns consumers to immediately stop using the recalled strollers and to contact the company to obtain a free repair kit. The company website includes information about how to obtain the kits, as well as video instructions for their proper installation.
