Story: Harris Teeter has issued a voluntary recall of one of its organic frozen berry blends after the Food and Drug Administration confirmed
the product is connected with an outbreak of Hepatitis A.
The product affected carries the UPC
7203670463and Code Dates of T041613C and T041613E. The FDA investigated claims that the berry mix was causing an outbreak of the disease and confirmed the presence of the pathogen. Harris Teeter stipulated that customers with product matching the UPC and Code Dates should either throw them away or return them for a full refund.
Hepatitis A was also linked to a berry mix in Costco stores, so it may be that the disease has come from a single farm or farms that supply a wide range of businesses. Hepatitis A can lie dormant for months before symptoms arise; symptoms include stomach pain, fatigue and other ailments. Consumers should be aware of what foods and products are associated with dangerous diseases. Earlier this year
the CDC reported on an outbreak of Salmonella Heidelbergdue to tainted chicken. An outbreak is defined by the CDC as any event wherein two or more people are sickened by the same food or drink; so far this year, they claim, there have been at least eight separate outbreaks involving Hepatitis A, several stains of Salmonella, and Escherichia coli (E. coli) O121.
