Should Women Consider Yaz, Yazmin and Nuvaring Birth Control Dangerous Drugs?

Comments Off

NuvaRing-Weight-Loss-300x240When it comes to modern birth control it seems there are plenty of options.  But many of these options carry dangerous risks and complications.  When choosing a birth control it’s important to be informed.  Here is a brief overview of some popular brands.

Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella birth control pills

These were all pitched as the choice for women desperate for relief from severe PMS and acne. But now, new independent studies have found that Yaz carries higher blood clotting risks than other leading birth control.

A survivor story:

Wanting to look and feel her best for her wedding day, a 24-year-old nurse said she switched to Yaz after watching one of its commercials that suggested this pill could help with bloating and acne. But just three months later her legs started to ache.  By the next evening, she was gasping for air. Blood clots in her legs had traveled through her veins to her lungs, causing a massive double pulmonary embolism. Her heart stopped and doctors revived her, but she slipped into a coma for almost two weeks. She is now permanently blind.

NuvaRing

NuvaRing’s is a flexible, plastic ring that you only had to use once a month, as opposed to every day like traditional birth control.  The NuvaRing is supposed to slowly release a low dose of two hormones – progestin and estrogen.  The primary defect with NuvaRing is that the ring releases hormones in far greater amounts than the company states which puts women at an increased risk blood clots (aka deep vein thrombosis)

A survivor story:

A 20-year-old college student was using the NuvaRing device when one day, after about a year of using, it she suddenly became extremely ill and began spitting up quarter-size chunks of blood onto the cement. This student had to be rushed to the hospital where she spent 10 days being pumped with anticoagulants to thin her blood. She was diagnosed as having developed a blood clot in her lung, a condition that could have been fatal if she wasn’t treated immediately.

The law firm of Shapiro, Lewis, Appleton and Favaloro is sensitive to the issues that women face after they have been injured by birth control.  We know that drugs that are not properly investigated or tested can cause serious harm to their users and derail one’s life.
