Number of Recalled Products Down, Injuries Up

Comments Off

The new children’s product safety law has resulted in a decline in recalls, Kids in Danger found in a new report. In fact, product recalls dropped 24 percent in 2011, but injuries sustained from recalled products were up 20 percnt. The report also found that only 15-30 percent of products are ever sent back or repaired.

Shockingly, 40 percent of recalls in 2011 involved children’s products. Two recalls involving bunk beds and infant video monitors involved deaths. The average recall response rate for children’s safety seat was 41 percent, while about 75 percent of owners of cars and trucks take their cars back for recalls.

Many people have no idea if products in their home have been recalled. Consumers can sign up for recall notices on fedederl website like those for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and even Recalls.gov, but most people never think about unsafe products until it’s too late. And unless a product recall gets major media attention, many consumers won’t know about the dangerous items in their homes.
