A woman from Colchester, Connecticut has been charged with DUI manslaughter stemming from a deadly December 2016 accident in Waterford, Connecticut.

The police stated in late March that the woman had turned herself in. She was involved in a deadly DUI crash on Dec. 26 at the intersection of Boston Post Road and Reynolds Lane in Waterford. A 24 year old woman was killed in the drunk driving wreck, and others were injured.

The woman was charged with second degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, reckless driving, and failure to drive right in a construction zone.

The police report stated that the woman was driving at 60 MPH in a 35 MPH zone, and had a blood alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit. It also stated that the woman failed to make a right turn properly and crossed the double yellow line and hit the other vehicle head on.

Our View

According to the CDC, there were 9967 people killed in drunk driving wrecks in 2014. This accounts for 1/3 of the traffic deaths in the US. This means that there is one death every 53 minutes in the US from a drunk driver. The cost of alcohol related wrecks in the US is $44 billion per year.

Our car accident and drunk driving personal injury attorneys see the results of this carnage all too often in our Virginia legal practice. We have represented many seriously injured people from drunk driving accidents in personal injury lawsuits. Also, we have handled many wrongful death lawsuits where a drunk driver killed someone.

A wrongful death lawsuit will never bring back the dead, but it does help the grieving family to get some sense of justice. A wrongful death settlement can help the family to survive financially after a breadwinner has been killed by the negligent actions of a drunk driver. The financial difficulties that accompany the emotional devastation of losing a loved one is a double blow that can be just overwhelming.

An experienced wrongful death attorney can often help the family to recover large settlements that can help them to keep their home, get their children through college, and to live a somewhat normal life as they readjust without their loved one.

For example, we helped a family who lost a loved one in a truck accident to recover $1.25 million in wrongful death arbitration. This helped the family immensely, as the deceased was a mechanic who was the primary breadwinner.
