Two people died, including a 21 year old woman from Virginia Beach, in a three vehicle crash on I-81 in Wythe County, Virginia on March 30.

The Virginia State Police stated that a Honda Insight was going south on I-81 when it crossed the median and slammed into a Honda Civic head-on in the northbound lanes. The crash caused the Insight to spin around and it was then hit by a pickup truck.

The driver of the Honda Insight was ejected from her vehicle and died at the crash scene.

The driver of the Civic was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger in the Civic died at the crash scene. The driver of the pickup truck and his three passengers had minor injuries.

Our View

Our Virginia Beach and Norfolk personal injury attorneys send our condolences to the families of those who died in this tragic Virginia highway crash. It is not clear at this time what caused the Honda Insight to cross the median and slam into the other Honda head on. There is a good chance that the driver of the Insight was distracted in some way and lost control of her car.

Distracted driving is a menace in America and is getting worse. The proliferation of cell phones with fast, instant Internet access nearly everywhere makes it much more likely that people will be using them while driving. This is never a good idea. Distracted driving killed 3477 poeople in 2015 alone. Distracted driving is caused by cell phones, playing with the radio, talking to passengers, eating and drinking, and other activities not related to driving.

Distracted driving with smart phones is especially common with younger drivers. We do not know if the 21 year old in this tragic Wythe County crash was using a smart phone at the time of the accident. If so, this will come out during the police investigation.

The above Virginia car accident led to death and serious injury, sadly, and many people in this situation choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent driver or their estate. The likely negligent driver in this accident is deceased, but the family of the other driver killed could file a wrongful death lawsuit against that person’s estate. It is likely that the deceased negligent driver had auto insurance, and that policy could pay a substantial amount in a wrongful death lawsuit.
