Two people were fatally injured in a crash that shut down Route 340 in Crimora, Virginia on November 26.

The Virginia State Police reported that a Toyota 4Runner was going south on the highway when it crossed the center line and slammed into a Ford F-150 pickup truck head-on.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck died upon impact. Her husband and three-year-old son in the vehicle were treated at a local hospital for serious injuries.

The driver of the Toyota truck died at the scene. His passenger was an 11-year-old boy who suffered serious injuries.

The police stated that alcohol was not a factor. The investigation is ongoing.

Our View

One of the most violent and frightening car accidents is the head-on collision. This type of car accident involves two vehicles slamming into each other at high speed in opposite directions. Many of these accidents happen on rural highways with 55 or 65 MPH speed limits. When two vehicles strike each other at those speeds in the opposite direction, serious injury or death is near certain.

Rural highways are often the location of these deadly accidents. There often is no median between the lanes going in opposite directions. Just a small mistake or a moment’s inattention can cause a car to veer into the opposite lane and cause a deadly crash.

Some of the common reasons for these accidents we have seen in our work as Virginia personal injury attorneys include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Fatigued driving
  • Improper passing
  • Driving under the influence
  • Poor weather conditions
  • Failure to maintain control

There are often other factors in play in these crashes. It is common for construction zones in rural areas to have poor signage and redirecting. This can cause the driver to go down the wrong road or lane. Also, not being familiar with the highway can cause such accidents. The accident above mentioned that the driver that crossed the center line may have done so on a curve. When drivers do not know the road well, it is possible for an accident to occur.

Our Virginia personal injury attorneys once represented a client who was struck head-on in Virginia Beach. The other driver was lost and was driving in the rain on the wrong side of the road. Our client smacked her head on the windshield. She suffered a closed head injury and neck spasm.

Our client was able to obtain a $25,000 verdict after several days of testimony.
