Two dead in Suffolk (VA) head-on crash

Comments Off

Thomas W. Ashburn and Shane W. Blair have been identified as the two men killed in a head-on collision Sunday afternoon in Suffolk.

Ashburn, 28, of Indian Trail Road, was driving a Volkswagen when crossed into the oncoming lane on a curve, a Suffolk police spokesman told The Virginian-Pilot. His car collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by Benjamin Copeland, 17, of Whaleyville Boulevard in Suffolk, the Suffolk News-Herald reported.

Copeland was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was in stable condition, the newspaper reported. Blair, 18, of Kansas Street, was a passenger in the pickup.

The crash happened on Indian Trail Road near Deer Path Road and was reported at 4:37 p.m., according to the Pilot.

Seventy-five percent of head-on collisions take place on rural, undivided two-lane roads, according to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. The association suggests these solutions to reduce such collisions:

– Install centerline rumble strips for two-lane roads

– Install profiled thermoplastic strips for centerlines

– Provide wider cross sections on two-lane roads

– Provide center two-way left-turn lanes for four- and two-lane roads

– Reallocate total two-lane roadway width (lane and shoulder) to include a narrow "buffer median"
