Portsmouth motorcycle crash leaves one dead

Comments Off

A motorcycle crash in Portsmouth has claimed the life of a 63-year-old man, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

David M. Henner was riding his motorcycle at Deep Creek and Portsmouth boulevards at 11:47 p.m. Wednesday night when he apparently lost control on the rain-slicked pavement while making a turn, Portsmouth Police Department authorities told the Pilot.

Henner, of Seminole Drive, died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Thursday morning. WAVY-TV reported that Henner suffered several injuries, including severe head injuries, after he collided with a light pole.

There have been a number of fatal motorcycle crashes in Hampton Roads in recent weeks, attorney Rick Shapiro reported recently. The Virginian-Pilot’s online database of fatal motorcycle accidents shows nine such crashes in Hampton Roads thus far in 2009.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on the agency’s Web site: "Motorcyclists also must be more cautious when riding in inclement weather, on slippery surfaces, or when encountering obstacles on the roadway. They must place greater reliance on their helmet, eye protection and clothing to increase riding comfort and to reduce the severity of injury should they become involved in a crash."
