IndyCar Racer Dan Wheldon Dies in Las Vegas Crash

Comments Off

Many of us can appreciate the cool cars, fast speeds and exciting competition that comes with racing. Whether Nascar or IndyCar racing is more your speed, the sport has gained popularity over the years. So often, though, audience members forget just how dangerous the races they see on television actually are.

Now, one of racing’s biggest superstars, Dan Wheldon, has become the sport’s latest casualty. In a recent Las Vegas IndyCar race, Wheldon was driving in the middle of a pack of cars traveling over 200 miles per hour. When cars in front of Wheldon began spinning, a huge pileup resulted. Wheldon couldn’t avoid the collision and slammed into another car before going airborne and colliding with a fence. His car briefly caught fire, and Wheldon was airlifted to a hospital where he later passed away from his injuries. He leaves behind a wife and two young songs.

As a car accident attorney, hearing about speeds that high in a confined area scares me. Too many drivers at such a high speed is indeed a recipe for disaster. Our thoughts are with Wheldon’s family and loved ones at this time. His talents, which won him two Indianapolis 500 crowns, will be missed in the racing community.
