Two women died and a third was seriously injured after a car hit three pedestrians in Bland County, Virginia on Feb. 19.

Virginia State Police have charged a 27 year old male driver with three felony counts of hit-and-run, one count of reckless driving and one count of failure to report an accident.

The police stated at 8:40 AM, the three women were on their morning walk, going east on the west bound lane in the 2100 block of Wilderness Road in Bland County.

A 1993 Ford Thunderbird drove towards them in the westbound lane, and the women moved over into the ditch lane, but the car ran off the road into the ditch lane and hit them.

Two of the women died at the scene and the third was taken to the hospital. The investigation into this pedestrian accident is ongoing.

Our View

The hearts of our Virginia personal injury attorneys go out to the families of the two pedestrians who died in this accident. Pedestrian accidents are common events in Virginia and across America. According to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, 4884 pedestrians and 726 bicyclists died in crashes with cars and trucks in 2014.  In 2013, 150,000 pedestrians were treated in ERs for non-fatal crash injuries, according to the CDC.

Our Virginia personal injury attorneys have worked on pedestrian accident cases in the past. We once represented an Old Dominion University student who was hit and seriously hurt by a driver leaving a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot in Norfolk.

Our client was crossing the street to get a cup of coffee. He was walking in a crosswalk when the defendant pulled out of the parking lot and hit our client – hard. The accident tossed him into the air and he was knocked out. The drive fled the scene.

A few hours later, our client awoke in the hospital and did not know what happened. He had suffered facial fractures, and he had thousands in medical bills and he missed his final exams that semester. His family members also had to travel from out of town to be with him in the hospital and during his recovery.

The defendant went to a repair shop in Norfolk with unusual damage on her windshield. The maintenance technician called the police and reported the incident. The police eventually charged the woman with hit and run collision with injuries. The pedestrian hit and run case settled for $67,500.

Unfortunately in the pedestrian case above, two women lost their lives. In that case, a wrongful death lawsuit may be appropriate because the media report suggests that the car driver was negligent. A wrongful death lawsuit can result in a large settlement that can be useful to help the family to move on from a devastating tragedy, pay medical bills and rearrange finances.
